<p>Web design, ecommerce and branding.<span id="more-742"></span></p>
<p>The Templar Knights Partnership was formed in September 2010 to promote the Knights Templar City of Tomar, in Portugal.</p>
<p>The partnership wants to do this in a number of ways:</p>
<p>Work with the local tourist board to promote Tomar<br />
Boost local business by selling wine from the region<br />
Provide an information service and publish guide books<br />
Run guided tours for visitors</p>
<p>10th Planet were asked to give the project an identity and create a website which looked modern and was easy to use but which reflected the deep history and heritage of Tomar and the fascinating history of the Knights Templar.</p>
<p>The website is the hub of the operation and covers:</p>
<p>Information about the partnership<br />
Several photo galleries<br />
A shop to sell local products, guide books, wine and tours<br />
A historical resource</p>
<p>We decided that a WordPress installation would allow the partnership to constantly update and renew the content and also offer an ecommerce and photo gallery solution.</p>

<p>In the run up to the release of the DVD, <a href="http://www.sheffieldvision.com/">Sheffield Vision</a> came back to us to update <a href="http://www.thebeatisthelaw.com">TheBeatisTheLaw.com</a> with the new and finalised branding. We&#8217;ve been with this project from the beginning, so were happy to be on board to take it to it&#8217;s final incarnation on the web.</p>
<p>This time the root of the core design came from The Designer&#8217;s Republic, the influential design studio that set up in the middle of the documentary&#8217;s focus period, rather than Martin Bedford, like last time.</p>
<p>The main challenge when turning a print design into something that will work on the web is making everything work within a medium that you as a designer has very little, if any control over how the viewer will see it in the end. You then have to factor in elements of usability, flow and user experience, all without sacrificing the aesthetic quality of the original design&#8230; Fortunately, we&#8217;re well versed in that <img src='http://10thpla.net/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>The site&#8217;s content was all in place from the last version of the site, so it was important that it all stayed in place and the cross over between versions was perfectly smooth as nether us nor Sheffield Vision wanted to see any downtime on the site. This meant having to readjust a lot of content to fit into a very different form factor, as well as moving and reorganising the structure, all without changing the site&#8217;s internal structure, to avoid losing the PageRank.</p>

<p>Dave Butcher started compiling lake light in late 2009 from his extensive portfolio of photography taken over a number of years. Lake Light is his third book covering his work in and around the Lake District. It&#8217;s also the first book that he decided to self-publish, lending him a little more leeway in the book&#8217;s presentation. That&#8217;s where we came in.</p>
<p>We developed Dave&#8217;s corporate identity a couple of years ago whilst creating his business cards, promotional literature and exhibition material. We also rebuilt  <a href="/portfolio/dave-butcher">his website</a> last year, but had so far missed out on producing a book for him due to him being locked into working with his publishers.</p>
<p>We jumped on the opportunity to create a stylish, elegant piece of work that followed Dave&#8217;s brand guidelines properly and really helped to show off his work in a way it deserves. The photographs are what it&#8217;s all about, and the brief was to allow them to tell their own story without distractions, whilst at the same time also provide enough information about them for the casual reader without having to refer to an index. However, if you do want to know more there&#8217;s a full technical index at the back with details of the camera used, film type and format of each shot.</p>
<p>As well as the photographs themselves the book has a section containing useful information and technical details to help the budding photographer learn his craft, and this is where Dave&#8217;s meticulous attention to details and documentation really shine through.</p>
<p>Each plate is numbered and plotted on a map at the front of the book, so you can even go to the lake district and see each of the sites Dave visited for yourself.</p>
<p>We worked closely with Dave throughout the making of Lake Light to make sure that we lived up to his high standards, even to the extent of arranging for him to visit our printers as the books were running through the press in order to inspet and fine-tune the quality and we were delighted to deliver a product that does his work justice.</p>

<p>The Beat is the Law is a sequel to 2001&#8242;s &#8220;Made in Sheffield&#8221;, a chronicle of the rise of music in the city from the early 1970s to the early 1980s when pioneers such as the Human League, ABC, Cabaret Voltaire, Heaven 17, Pulp, I&#8217;m So Hollow, Artery, The Extras, 2.3, Clock DVA and The Comsat Angels set about their mission&#8230;to &#8220;kill off Rock and Roll&#8221;!</p>
<p>That film was premièred at Sheffield&#8217;s International Documentary Festival (another client of ours!) and has since become an international success, becoming part of musical history itself as well as making it into Time Out&#8217;s list of 50 greatest Musical Films Ever. It also features one of the last interviews with John Peel, as well as contributions from all the main players.</p>

<p>&#8220;The Beat is the Law&#8221; continues the story through to the 1990s taking in Pulp, Babybird, Longpigs, Moloko and more and also follows the rise of dance music from Warp, FON and WAU!MrModo as well as interviews with Jarvis Cocker and Richard Hawley.</p>
<p>Eve Wood (director) and Richard Wood (Producer) asked us to create a website for this project after a conversation between Andy and Eve which started in the Showroom cinema in 2001, got interrupted, and then, strangely, resumed in 2008 in exactly the same place.</p>
<p>Working as sponsors of the documentary we created a blog-based website so that the producers can make instant updates and drive the promotion of the film as it gains momentum between its preview screening as part of Sensoria 2009 and its full premiere at DocFest.</p>

<p>Doctor Dave Butcher is an internationally acclaimed black and white photographer. He is also a respected authority on the techniques of photography and photographic printing. He shares his skill in workshops, lectures and courses and is the author and subject of several books and magazine articles.</p>
<p>Dave was looking to pull together all of his marketing, publicity and corporate material which had built up over time and did not have any consistency or recognisable style. Much of the printed material was produced in-house on an ad-hoc basis.</p>
<p>10th Planet started from scratch and, after immersing ourselves in the world of mono photography, created a striking new corporate identity which was inspired by one of Dave&#8217;s own favourite pieces of work. The logo and accompanying style was designed to be flexible and versatile enough to be used in a very wide range of situations.</p>

<p>It was applied initially to stationery, brochures, posters and a book cover, after which we completely redesigned the website <a href="http://www.davebutcher.co.uk/">www.davebutcher.co.uk</a> to provide information, a gallery of his entire collection of work (all of which is available to purchase) and the ability to book courses. Dave can control this website himself using a bespoke content management system we created especially for the project.</p>
<p>The highly recognisable new logo, corporate style and publicity material is helping to promote the Dave Butcher brand worldwide.</p>

<p>How do you make orthotic shoes sexy? This was the challenge posed to us with this project. The client wanted to steer clear of any medical connotations and focus on trying to make the product a desirable fashion item.</p>
<p>We started by choosing a look that would ooze exoticism, style and class, so the customer would feel like they were looking at a truly exceptional product. We created a baroque inspired design, filled it with luxurious reds and purples and added subtle textures to bring about a decadent, yet intimate theme.</p>
<p>From a technical view, the Concept Footwear includes a variety of features that help bring the site to life. Each style of shoe includes an interactive 360 rotating view, a feature that required us to carry out product photography and image preparation work for each style. The site was designed to be compatible with all browsers, but included some extra flourishes for people with more modern browsers such as AJAX based loading of available styles by brand and custom fonts using Flash.</p>
<p>It was important to the client to include customer feedback, so we implemented customer reviews and a star rating system, together with a moderation panel for the client. The customer can leave feedback about a product without ever leaving the page they&#8217;re on and is invited to join the Concept Footwear mailing list, providing a mechanism to create a customer database.</p>

<p>After designing Complete Runner&#8217;s website in 2001, the owners felt it was time for a change and to embrace new technology.</p>
<p>10th Planet updated everything both visually and technically to bring the online store back up-to-date and build on the success of the old site.</p>
<p>The site was built ontop of a heavily customised Zen Cart installation. We took the Zen Cart framework and pushed it to its absolute limits, eschewing the very tired pre-built templates and conventions that were currently on offer.</p>
<p>As well as designing and building the site we also registered the domain and provide managed hosting for the site. This means that Complete Runner has complete peace of mind and know who to turn to when they need help.</p>

<p>Since the update, sales have started coming in from all over the world and increased overall by more than 20% and look to improve even further.</p>

<p>Uncommon People is an ambitious project that aims to create a audio-visual history of the bands and music that have come out of Sheffield. We were excited to work on this project, particularly as nothing of its kind had ever been attempted before.</p>

<p>We produced a powerful 3D visualisation using Adobe&#8217;s Flash and Flex which lets you explore the connections between different bands and the people that made them.</p>
<p>Every area of the site allows contributions from users which will, in time, become a major part of the experience.</p>
<p>Uncommon People is constantly under active development and we&#8217;re working with Sensoria, the instigators of the project, to add new features all the time.</p>

<p>10th Planet took on the task of designing the print and web presence of the innaugral Sensoria festival in 2008. We were so in agreement for the need for such an event in Sheffield that we became in-kind sponsors of the project.</p>
<p>The festival&#8217;s aim was to bring together film, music, visual arts and performance in somthing never before experienced in Sheffield and was a roaring success.</p>
<p>2009 sees the project continue with a brand new website which is built on a blogging system to allow instant updates by the organisers and also feedback from the public. Social networking is also a vital part of the marketing approach.</p>

<p>As well as the website we produced advertising material, brochures, programmes and posters as in-kind sponsors of the festival. Sensoria also has a year-round commitment to education and arts promotion and we are also involved in a number of its side-projects.</p>
