<p>In the run up to the release of the DVD, <a href="http://www.sheffieldvision.com/">Sheffield Vision</a> came back to us to update <a href="http://www.thebeatisthelaw.com">TheBeatisTheLaw.com</a> with the new and finalised branding. We&#8217;ve been with this project from the beginning, so were happy to be on board to take it to it&#8217;s final incarnation on the web.</p>
<p>This time the root of the core design came from The Designer&#8217;s Republic, the influential design studio that set up in the middle of the documentary&#8217;s focus period, rather than Martin Bedford, like last time.</p>
<p>The main challenge when turning a print design into something that will work on the web is making everything work within a medium that you as a designer has very little, if any control over how the viewer will see it in the end. You then have to factor in elements of usability, flow and user experience, all without sacrificing the aesthetic quality of the original design&#8230; Fortunately, we&#8217;re well versed in that <img src='http://10thpla.net/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>The site&#8217;s content was all in place from the last version of the site, so it was important that it all stayed in place and the cross over between versions was perfectly smooth as nether us nor Sheffield Vision wanted to see any downtime on the site. This meant having to readjust a lot of content to fit into a very different form factor, as well as moving and reorganising the structure, all without changing the site&#8217;s internal structure, to avoid losing the PageRank.</p>

<p>The Beat is the Law is a sequel to 2001&#8242;s &#8220;Made in Sheffield&#8221;, a chronicle of the rise of music in the city from the early 1970s to the early 1980s when pioneers such as the Human League, ABC, Cabaret Voltaire, Heaven 17, Pulp, I&#8217;m So Hollow, Artery, The Extras, 2.3, Clock DVA and The Comsat Angels set about their mission&#8230;to &#8220;kill off Rock and Roll&#8221;!</p>
<p>That film was premièred at Sheffield&#8217;s International Documentary Festival (another client of ours!) and has since become an international success, becoming part of musical history itself as well as making it into Time Out&#8217;s list of 50 greatest Musical Films Ever. It also features one of the last interviews with John Peel, as well as contributions from all the main players.</p>

<p>&#8220;The Beat is the Law&#8221; continues the story through to the 1990s taking in Pulp, Babybird, Longpigs, Moloko and more and also follows the rise of dance music from Warp, FON and WAU!MrModo as well as interviews with Jarvis Cocker and Richard Hawley.</p>
<p>Eve Wood (director) and Richard Wood (Producer) asked us to create a website for this project after a conversation between Andy and Eve which started in the Showroom cinema in 2001, got interrupted, and then, strangely, resumed in 2008 in exactly the same place.</p>
<p>Working as sponsors of the documentary we created a blog-based website so that the producers can make instant updates and drive the promotion of the film as it gains momentum between its preview screening as part of Sensoria 2009 and its full premiere at DocFest.</p>

<p>10th Planet took on the task of designing the print and web presence of the innaugral Sensoria festival in 2008. We were so in agreement for the need for such an event in Sheffield that we became in-kind sponsors of the project.</p>
<p>The festival&#8217;s aim was to bring together film, music, visual arts and performance in somthing never before experienced in Sheffield and was a roaring success.</p>
<p>2009 sees the project continue with a brand new website which is built on a blogging system to allow instant updates by the organisers and also feedback from the public. Social networking is also a vital part of the marketing approach.</p>

<p>As well as the website we produced advertising material, brochures, programmes and posters as in-kind sponsors of the festival. Sensoria also has a year-round commitment to education and arts promotion and we are also involved in a number of its side-projects.</p>

<p><span id="more-152"></span>When K-Pasa decided to relaunch itself, they came to us for help. Previously K-Pasa had been a cheap and cheerful restaurant that was frequented mostly by students. The owners wanted to reinvent itself and move upmarket and we were drafted in to help realise it.</p>
<p>We were originally contracted to design the logo and brand, menus, stationery, and signage, but after their architect turned in some uninspiring ideas, we ended up designing the interior as well. Not being ones to turn down a challenge we took the opportunity to create a bold and vibrant interior that reflected the restaurant&#8217;s novel approach to Mediterranean cuisine.</p>

<p>We offset bright, bold and earthy colours with modern furniture and fittings to create a space which felt exclusive and upmarket without being snooty and alienating. We created original artwork for the block canvases placed around the restaurant and then oversaw the shopfitters to ensure that what we planned actually came out right.</p>
<p>In the weeks leading up to the launch we also created invitations to the opening night, built the <a href="http://www.k-pasa.co.uk/" target="_blank">K-Pasa website</a> to help promote the launch and build up and online presence. We also helped to start a mailing list and advised on the use of social media, such as the setting up of a <a href="http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=40818874461" target="_blank">K-Pasa group on Facebook</a>.</p>
<p>Andy even helped the new management choose their new chef with a tasting session&#8230;much to everyone else at 10th Planet&#8217;s annoyance.</p>
